Moon Phases & Rituals

A ten-minute new moon ritual

No altar, no special tools, no perfect words. A simple way to begin again with each new moon, using only a candle, a page and your own breath.

A pale moon glowing through a dark lattice of bare branches

The new moon is the dark one. It is the night the moon sits between us and the sun and shows us nothing at all. For a long time I thought of it as a blank, a gap between the moons that mattered.

Now it is my favourite. The new moon is the deep breath before the sentence. It is the seed still underground. Nothing has to be visible yet.

You do not need much for this. You need about ten minutes, a candle, a pen and a piece of paper. If you have none of those, you need only yourself and somewhere to sit.

1. Arrive (two minutes)

Turn off the big light. Light the candle, or simply let the room be dim. Sit down, and put both feet on the floor.

Breathe in for four counts, and out for six. Do this five or six times. Longer out-breaths tell the body that it is safe to soften.

You are not trying to become someone new. You are making room for who is already arriving.

2. Clear (three minutes)

At the top of your page, write: What am I ready to set down?

Write whatever comes, without tidying it. Habits, worries, an old story about yourself, the voice that says you are always behind. When you have finished, draw one line underneath it all. That line is enough. You do not have to burn anything.

3. Plant (three minutes)

Underneath the line, write: What would I like to grow this cycle?

Choose one small, honest thing, not a resolution and not a rebrand. "I would like to drink water before coffee." "I would like to walk under trees once a week." "I would like to be kinder to myself when I make mistakes."

Write it as though it is already beginning: I am making room for rest. I am learning to ask for help.

4. Close (two minutes)

Place your hand on the page, or over your heart. Say your intention out loud, quietly. It can feel strange the first time. Say it anyway.

Then blow out the candle, if you lit one, and fold the page. Tuck it into a book you love, a drawer, or the back of your journal. On the full moon, about two weeks from now, take it out and read it again. Notice what has started to sprout.

If you miss the new moon

You have not missed anything. The moon is a rhythm, not a deadline. The few days either side of the new moon carry the same quiet energy, and next month she will return, as she always has.
